Messianic Texts in the Prophets: Isaiah 11:1 (8th c. BC)
A Shoot חֹ֖טֶר (chōter) A Branch נֵ֖צֶר (nētzer)

“Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, 
and a branch from his roots will bear fruit” (Isa. 11:1, NASB).

וְיָצָ֥א חֹ֖טֶר מִגֵּ֣זַע יִשָׁ֑י וְנֵ֖צֶר מִשָּׁרָשָׁ֥יו יִפְרֶֽה׃

“And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed” 
(Gen. 12:1-3, Abrahamic Covenant, unconditional/unilateral).

“Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever” 
(2 Sam. 7:16, Davidic Covenant, unconditional/unilateral).

“The surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root downward and bear fruit upward” (Is. 37:31).

“‘Behold, the days are coming,’ declares the LORD, ‘When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch;  and He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land’” 
(Jer. 23:5).

The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham: . . . Jesse was the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon by Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah” (Matt. 1:1, 6).

“After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘I HAVE FOUND DAVID the son of Jesse, A MAN AFTER MY HEART, who will do all My will.’ From the descendants of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus” (Acts 13:23).

But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee,  and came and lived in a city called Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: ‘He shall be called a Nazarene’” (Matt. 2:19-23).

“and one of the elders  said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals” (Rev. 5:5).


“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star” (Rev. 22:16).
