Salvation

What is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek? The Gospel (Rom 1:16)

What is the Gospel?
Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and He was buried, and He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to Paul also. (1 Cor 15:3-8)

Who can be saved?
“But He said, ‘The things that are impossible with people are possible with God” (Luke 18:27).

Who has been saved?
Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life” (John 5:24).

Who will die in their sin?
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Rom 3:23).

Jesus said, “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins” (John 8:24).

Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).

Who will be saved?
Jesus said, “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture” (John 10:9).

“And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Acts 2:21).

“Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).

How are sinners saved?
"But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it--the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Or is God the God of the Jews only? Is he not the God of the Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one--who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law" (Rom 3:21-31).

"Then he brought them out and said, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?' And they said, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household'" (Acts 16:30).

"Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved" (Rom 10:9-10).

Why do those who have faith in Jesus Christ have eternal assurance?
"God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord"

(1 Cor 1:9).

"In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory" (Eph 1:13-14).

"For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life" (Rom 5:10).

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them” (Eph 2:8-10).

"And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ" (Phil 1:6).

"May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints of light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins"
(Col 1:11-14).

Jesus said, "And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?"

(John 11:26).

Matt. 6:5   “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love  to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others.  Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray,  go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret.  And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matt. 6:7   “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Matt. 6:9  Pray then like this:
              “Our Father in heaven,
              hallowed be your name.
10         Your kingdom come,
              your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11         Give us  this day our daily bread,
12        and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13        And lead us not into temptation,
                        but deliver us from  evil.

Matt. 14:23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,

Matt. 26:41  Watch and  pray that you  may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”

Matt. 26:44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again.

Mark 1:35    And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.

Mark 6:46 And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.

Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

Luke 6:12   In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.

Luke 6:28  bless those who curse you,  pray for those who abuse you.

Luke 9:18    Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 And they answered,  “John the Baptist. But others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.”  20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered,  “The Christ of God.”

Luke 9:28    Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray.  29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white.

              “Father, hallowed be your name.
              Your kingdom come.
3            Give us each day our daily bread,
4           and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”

Luke 18:1   And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.

Luke 18:10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed   thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12  I fast twice a week;  I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off,  would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God,  be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Luke 20:47  who devour widows’ houses and  for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

Acts 28:8 It happened that the father of Publius lay sick with fever and dysentery. And Paul visited him and prayed, and putting his hands on him healed him.

Rom. 8:26   Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but  the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

1Cor. 11:4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head,  5 but every wife  who prays or  prophesies  with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same  as if her head were shaven.

1Cor. 11:13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered?

1Cor. 14:13   Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret.  14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.  15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also;  I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will  sing with my mind also.

1Th. 5:25    Brothers, pray for us.

James 5:17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and  he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.  18  Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.

Jude 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and  praying in the Holy Spirit,

1.     to have a warm regard for and interest in another, cherish, have affection for, love
2.     to have high esteem for or satisfaction with something, take pleasure in
3.     to practice/express love, prove one’s love

Appearances of aÓga¿ph (love) in the New Testament:

Matt. 24:12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.

Luke 11:42    “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God.  These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

John 5:42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you.

John 13:35  By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 15:9  As the Father has loved me,  so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10  If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as  I have kept  my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

John 15:13  Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

John 17:26  I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and  I in them.”

Rom. 5:5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Rom. 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Rom. 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

Rom. 8:39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Rom. 12:9    Let love be genuine.  Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

Rom. 13:10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Rom. 14:15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love.  By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died.

Rom. 15:30   I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by  the love of the Spirit,  to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf,

1Cor. 4:21 What do you wish?  Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love in a spirit of gentleness?

1Cor. 8:1   Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that  “all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” puffs up,  but love builds up.

1Cor. 13:1   If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.  2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith,  so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.  3  If I give away all I have, and  if I deliver up my body to be burned,  but have not love, I gain nothing.

1Cor. 13:4    Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant

1Cor. 13:8   Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

1Cor. 13:13   So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

1Cor. 14:1    Pursue love, and earnestly desire the  spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

1Cor. 16:14  Let all that you do be done in love.

1Cor. 16:24 My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

2Cor. 2:4 For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.

2Cor. 2:8 So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him.

2Cor. 5:14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that  one has died for all, therefore all have died;

2Cor. 6:6  by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit,  genuine love;

2Cor. 8:7 But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you — see that you excel in this act of grace also.

2Cor. 8:8    I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine.

2Cor. 8:24 So give proof before the churches of your love and of our boasting about you to these men.

2Cor. 13:11   Finally, brothers, rejoice.  Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and  peace will be with you.

2Cor. 13:14    The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Gal. 5:6 For in Christ Jesus  neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

Gal. 5:13   For you were called to freedom, brothers.  Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Gal. 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,  kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Eph. 1:4  even as he  chose us in him  before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love

Eph. 1:15   For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints,

Eph. 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy,  because of the great love with which he loved us,

Eph. 3:17  so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being  rooted and  grounded in love,

Eph. 3:19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that  you may be filled with all  the fullness of God.

Eph. 4:2 with all humility and  gentleness, with  patience,  bearing with one another in love,

Eph. 4:15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,  16  from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped,  when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Eph. 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and  gave himself up for us, a  fragrant  offering and sacrifice to God.

Eph. 6:23    Peace be to the brothers, and  love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Phil. 1:9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more,  with knowledge and all discernment,

Phil. 1:16 The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.

Phil. 2:1   So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from  love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,  2  complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

Col. 1:4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints,

Col. 1:8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

Col. 1:13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to  the kingdom of  his beloved Son,

Col. 2:2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of  God’s mystery, which is Christ,

Col. 3:14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

1Th. 1:3 remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

1Th. 3:6   But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of  your faith and love and reported  that you always remember us kindly and  long to see us, as we long to see you—

1Th. 3:12 and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you,

1Th. 5:8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.

1Th. 5:13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work.  Be at peace among yourselves.

2Th. 1:3    We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing.

2Th. 2:10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

2Th. 3:5 May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

1Tim. 1:5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and  a good conscience and  a sincere faith.

1Tim. 2:15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

1Tim. 4:12  Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers  an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

1Tim. 6:11   But as for you, O man of God, flee these things.  Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.

2Tim. 1:7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

2Tim. 1:13  Follow the pattern of  the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

2Tim. 2:22   So flee  youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with  those who call on the Lord  from a pure heart.

2Tim. 3:10    You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness,

Titus 2:2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled,  sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.

Philem. 5 because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints,

Philem. 7 For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints  have been refreshed through you.

Philem. 9 yet for love’s sake I prefer to appeal to you—I, Paul, an old man and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus—

Heb. 6:10 For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in  serving the saints, as you still do.

Heb. 10:24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,

1Pet. 4:8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

1Pet. 5:14  Greet one another with the kiss of love.

Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

2Pet. 1:7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection  with love.

1John 2:5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected.  By this we may know that we are in him:

1John 2:15    Do not love the world or the things in the world.  If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1John 3:1   See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that  it did not know him.

1John 3:16   By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and  we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.  17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet  closes his heart against him,  how does God’s love abide in him?

1John 4:7   Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and  whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.  8  Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.  9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.  10 In this is love, not that we have loved God  but that he loved us and sent his Son to be  the propitiation for our sins.

1John 4:12  No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and  his love is perfected in us.

1John 4:16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us.  God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.  17 By this is love perfected with us, so that  we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because  as he is so also are we in this world.  18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

1John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

2John 3    Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love.

2John 6 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.
