John 20:30 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

John 20:30    Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

What are not written in this book?

“Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book” (John 20:30).
  •       How is this reiterated in John 21:25?
Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written” (John 21:25).

Why have these been written?

“but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31).
  •       What are you to believe?
“…that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God…” (John 20:31).
  •       What may whoever believes in Him have?
John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
  •       What is the result of unbelief in Jesus?
John 8:24 “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

  Father,
You are true. Your will is for us to believe in Your Son Whom You sent to take away the sins of the world. For You so loved the world, that You gave Your only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For You did not send Your Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

How may you have life in His name?

“…that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31).

John 20:28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

John 20:28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”  29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed?  Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

How does Thomas respond when Jesus appears and says to him, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into my side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing” (John 20:27)?

“Thomas answered and said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” (John 20:28).

What does Jesus ask Thomas?

“Jesus said to him, ‘Because you have seen Me, have you believed?’…” (John 20:29).

Who does Jesus say are blessed?

“... Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed” (John 2:29).

  •       In his address “to those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood” (1 Peter 1:1-2a) how does Peter describe their relationship to Jesus Christ?
o   1Pet. 1:8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory

Father,
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with You, and the Word was You. He was in the beginning with You. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

The Word is the true Light, which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become Your children, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of You.

And the Word became flesh…

Our Lord and our God.

In Jesus Name,
Amen.

John 20:26 After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

After how many days are His disciples again inside?

“After eight days His disciples were again inside…” (John 20:26).

Who is with them?

“…and Thomas with them…” (John 20:26).

What does Jesus say when He comes, the doors having been shut, and stands in their midst?

“… ‘Peace be with you’” (John 20:26).

What does He say to Thomas?

“… ‘Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing” (John 20:27).
  •       ἄπιστος (apistos) “without faith, disbelieving, unbelieving” (BDAG, 103).
  •       What does Heb 11:6 say is impossible without faith?
o   Heb. 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

Father,
You have handed all things over to Yeshua, and no one knows who the Son is except You, and who You are except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal You. May the Spirit’s ministry of renewal and regeneration be glorious in our midst, bringing many to faith in Yeshua. In Yeshua’s Name, Amen.

John 20:24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

Who is not with the disciples when Jesus came?

“But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came” (John 20:24).

So what were the other disciples saying to him?

“… ‘We have seen the Lord!’…” (John 20:25).

How does Thomas respond to the disciples?

“…But he said to them, ‘Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe'” (John 20:24).
  •       Why would Thomas expect to find the imprint of the nails in Jesus’ hands and a place to put his hand into His side?
o  John 19:17    They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in  Hebrew, Golgotha.  18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “ JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
o  John 19:32 So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him;  33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.  34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.  35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.  36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “ NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN.”  37 And again another Scripture says, “ THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED.”
§  What is prophesied concerning those who look on Him Whom they pierced?
·      Zech. 12:10   “And  I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced,  they shall mourn for him,  as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
·      Rev. 1:7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and  every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail  on account of him. Even so. Amen.
Father,
May You give eyes to see and ears to hear the truth of Christ Jesus our Lord. May many confess with their mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in their heart that You raised Him from the dead, so that they will be saved, for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, “WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him: for “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.” Glory to You and to our Lord Jesus Christ for so great a salvation by Your grace through faith alone in Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

John 20:23 “ If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”

John 20:23 If you forgive the sins of any, their sins  have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”

What is the first conditional statement?

“If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them...” (John 20:23).

What is the second conditional statement?

“…If you retain the sins of any, they have been retained” (John 20:23).

  •       How do the following verses compare to John 20:23?
o  Matt. 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
o  Matt. 18:18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
o  Is. 22:22  “Then I will set the key of the house of David on his shoulder, When he opens no one will shut, When he shuts no one will open.
o  Rev. 3:7   “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

Father,
May You raise up leaders who will wisely administer justice and mercy in submission to Messiah Yeshua. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

John 20:22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

John 20:22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

What does Jesus do when He had said, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you” (John 20:21)?

“… He breathed on them…” (John 20:22).
  •       ἐνεφὐσησεν  (enephysēsen) (“He breathed”) 3S Aorist Active Indicative of ἐμφυσάω
  •       “The verb translated breathed on (emphusao) appears only here in the New Testament. In the Septuagint it is used in Genesis 2:7 of God’s breathing the breath of life into man; it is also used in Ezekiel 37:9. John expects his readers to see a parallel between God’s creative breath in Genesis 2:7 and Jesus’ act of breathing here. In a number of languages breathed on must be rendered “blew upon.” A term literally meaning “breathe” may refer only to normal inhaling and exhaling of the breath, while anything as striking as this action of Jesus would be expressed as ‘blowing upon.’”
Barclay Moon Newman and Eugene Albert Nida, A Handbook on the Gospel of John, UBS Handbook Series (New York: United Bible Societies, 1993), 615.

When Jesus breathes on them, what does He say to them?

“… ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’” (John 20:22).
  •       λάβετε (labete)  2P Aorist Active Imperative of λαμβάνω
  •       πνεῦμα ἅγιον (pneuma hagion) (the Holy Spirit")
  •       What had Jesus said about the Holy Spirit?
o   John 14:16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
o   John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
o   John 15:26   “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,
o   John 16:7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
o   John 16:13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

Father,
Glory and thanks to You as the Giver of every good and perfect gift. By Your grace and according to Your Word, You sent Jesus to reveal and to redeem. All who are baptized into the death of Jesus are raised in the power of His resurrection through the Holy Spirit Whom You sent to give us new life. And Your love has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who was given to us. Our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit Who is in us, Whom we have from You. We are not our own.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and Your love, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
