John 20:24
But Thomas, one of the
twelve, called Didymus, was not with them
when Jesus came. 25
So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said
to them, “Unless I see in His hands
the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and
put my hand into His side, I will not
believe.”
Who is not with the disciples when Jesus
came?
“But Thomas,
one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came” (John
20:24).
So what were the other disciples saying
to him?
“… ‘We have
seen the Lord!’…” (John 20:25).
How does Thomas respond to the
disciples?
“…But he said
to them, ‘Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger
into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe'”
(John 20:24).
- Why would Thomas expect to find the imprint of the nails in Jesus’ hands and a place to put his hand into His side?
o
John 19:17
They took Jesus,
therefore, and He went out, bearing
His own cross, to the place called the
Place of a Skull, which is called in
Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and
Jesus in between. 19 Pilate also wrote an
inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “ JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
o
John 19:32 So
the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was
crucified with Him; 33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already
dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear,
and immediately blood and water came
out. 35 And he who has seen has
testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the
truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “ NOT
A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “ THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED.”
§ What is prophesied concerning those who
look on Him Whom they pierced?
· Zech. 12:10 “And
I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a
spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so
that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep
bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
· Rev. 1:7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who
pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.
Father,
May You give
eyes to see and ears to hear the truth of Christ Jesus our Lord. May many
confess with their mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in their heart that You
raised Him from the dead, so that they will be saved, for with the heart a
person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses,
resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, “WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL
NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for
the same Lord is Lord of all,
abounding in riches for all who call on Him: for “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME
OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.” Glory to You and to our Lord Jesus Christ for so
great a salvation by Your grace through faith alone in Jesus. In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
