Greek Word Study: ἀγάπη (love)


Greek Word Study: aÓga¿ph (agápē)

Definition: (BDAG, pg. 5)
1.     to have a warm regard for and interest in another, cherish, have affection for, love
2.     to have high esteem for or satisfaction with something, take pleasure in
3.     to practice/express love, prove one’s love

Appearances of aÓga¿ph (love) in the New Testament:

Matt. 24:12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.

Luke 11:42    “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God.  These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

John 5:42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you.

John 13:35  By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 15:9  As the Father has loved me,  so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10  If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as  I have kept  my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

John 15:13  Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

John 17:26  I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and  I in them.”

Rom. 5:5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Rom. 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Rom. 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

Rom. 8:39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
