Mark 14:37-38 And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

How had Peter responded to Jesus’ words, “Truly, I tell you, this every night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times” (Mark 14:30)?
“But he said emphatically, ‘If I must die with you, I will not deny you.’ And they all said the same” (Mark 14:31).

What two imperatives does Jesus give to Peter, James, and John before He goes a little further to pray?
“…Remain here and watch” (Mark 14:34).
μείνατε – remain, stay (BDAG, 630)
γρηγορεῖτε – stay awake, be watchful, be in constant readiness, be on alert (BDAG, 208).

What does Jesus find and say when He comes?
“And he came and found them sleeping and he said to Peter, ‘Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?” (Mark 14:37).

What two imperatives does Jesus give before He goes a second time to pray?
“Watch and pray…” (Mark 14:38).
γρηγορεῖτε – stay awake, be watchful, be in constant readiness, be on alert (BDAG, 208).
προσεύχεσθε – to petition deity, pray (BDAG, 879).

What clause introduced by the Greek Ἵνα explains the purpose for Jesus’ command to “Watch and pray…” (14:38)?
“…that you may not enter into temptation (πειρασμόν).” (Mark 14:38).
πειρασμός – an attempt to make one do something wrong, temptation, enticement to sin (BDAG, 793).

What are contrasted in “the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Mark 14:38)?
spirit (πνεῦμα) – a part of human personality, spirit, (when used with  σάρξ, the flesh, it denotes the immaterial part [2 Cor 7:1; Col 2:5]. Flesh and spirit=the whole personality, in its outer and inner aspects) (BDAG, 833).

flesh (σάρξ) -  the physical body as functioning entity, body, physical. “In Paul’s thought especially, all parts of the body constitute a totality known as σάρξ or flesh, which is dominated by sin to such a degree that wherever flesh is, all forms of sin are likewise present, and no good thing can live in the σάρξ (Rom 7:18). (BDAG, 914)

What adjective does Jesus use to describe spirit (πνεῦμα)?
Willing (Mark 14:38).
πρόθυμος – being eager to be of service, ready, willing, eager, of the spirit (BDAG, 870).

What adjective does Jesus use to describe flesh (σάρξ)?
Weak (Mark 14:38)
ἀσθενής – of that which lacks strength: ‘weak, powerless’ (BDAG, 142).

What does Jesus command in order that “you may not enter into temptation…”?
Watch and pray

Abba Father,
Your nature is divine and Your power is eternal. You are incorruptible, immortal, God only wise. All things are possible for You. We confess our utter dependence on You for strength to withstand temptation, for though our spirit may be willing, our flesh is weak. “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out” (Rom 7:18). May we walk by the Holy Spirit so that we do not gratify the desires of the flesh. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Mark 14:36 “And he said, ‘Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.’”

How does Jesus address God in prayer?
“Abba, Father” (Mark 14:36).

What is the meaning of the vocative expression “Abba, Father”?

Where does “Abba Father” appear in the NT?

·      Mark 14:36 “And he said,  ‘Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me.  Yet not what I will, but what you will.’”

·      Rom. 8:15 “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry,  ‘Abba! Father!’”

·      Gal. 4:6 “And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’”

In Mark 14:36, what does Jesus say is possible for God?

All things

What was Jesus’ request in Mark 14:36?

“Remove this cup from me”

“The cup stands, by metonymy, for what it contains” (BDAG, 857).

What had Jesus previously said to His disciples about His cup?

Mark 10:38 “Jesus said to them,  ‘You do not know what you are asking. Are you able  to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?’”

What is the cup that Jesus gave to  His disciples in Luke 22:20?

“And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood'” (Luke 22:20).

What is revealed about the new covenant in Jeremiah 31:33?

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people” (Jer 31:33).

What does Hebrews 10:8-17 say about the establishment of the new covenant?

Heb. 10:8   When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in  sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law),  9 then he added,  “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second.  10 And by that will  we have been sanctified through the offering of  the body of Jesus Christ  once for all.

Heb. 10:11   And every priest stands  daily at his service,  offering repeatedly the same sacrifices,  which can never take away sins.  12 But when Christ  had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he  sat down at the right hand of God,  13 waiting from that time  until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.  14 For by a single offering  he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

Heb. 10:15   And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

Heb. 10:16     “This is the covenant that I will make with them

after those days, declares the Lord:

I will put my laws on their hearts,

and write them on their minds,”

Heb. 10:17   then he adds,

“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

In Mark 14:36, whose will does Jesus seek?

“…Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

How do the following verses clarify God’s will for Jesus?

  • Phil. 2:8 “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
  • Heb. 5:8 "Although  he was a son,  he learned obedience through what he suffered."
  • 2 Cor 5:21 “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
  • Heb. 12:2 "looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,  who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising  the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God."

For this purpose

John 13:1   Now before  the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that  his hour had come  to depart out of this world to the Father,  having loved  his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

According to John 13:1, to what is “his hour” referring?
His departure out of this world to the Father

John 17:1   When Jesus had spoken these words,  he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father,  the hour has come;  glorify your Son that the Son may  glorify you,
In John 17:1, what does Jesus pray?
"Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you"

According to Hebrews 10:14, what was accomplished by Christ’s single offering of His body?
