The Seventy Weeks in Daniel 9:24-27

Prayer and Bible Expo
Dan. 9:24   “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place. 25 “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress.  26 “Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined.  27 “And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”

Daniel 9:24-27

Messiah the Prince
מָשִׁ֣יחַ נָגִ֔יד (māshīach nāgīd)

“Seventy weeks
have been decreed
for your people and your holy city,
to finish the transgression,
to make an end of sin,
to make atonement for iniquity,
to bring in everlasting righteousness,
to seal up vision and prophecy
and to anoint the most holy place.

So you are to know and discern
that from the issuing of a decree
to restore and rebuild Jerusalem
until
Messiah the Prince
there will be
seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
it will be built again,
with plaza and moat, even in times of distress.

Then after the sixty-two weeks
the Messiah will be cut off
and have nothing,
and the people of the prince
who is to come
will destroy the city and the sanctuary.
And its end will come with a flood;
even to the end there will be war;
desolations are determined.
And he will make a firm covenant
with the many
for one week,
but in the middle of the week
he will put a stop
to sacrifice and grain offering;
and on the wing of abominations
will come
one who makes desolate,
even until a complete destruction,
one that is decreed,
is poured out
on the one who makes desolate”
(Dan. 9:24-27).

“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this. ” (Isa. 9:6-7).

“By oppression and judgment He was taken away; and as for His generation, who considered that He was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?” (Isa. 53:8).

“And it came about in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, that wine was before him, and I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence. So the king said to me, ‘Why is your face sad though you are not sick? This is nothing but sadness of heart.’ Then I was very much afraid. I said to the king, ‘Let the king live forever. Why should my face not be sad when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies desolate and its gates have been consumed by fire?‘ Then the king said to me, ‘What would you request?’ So I prayed to the God of heaven. I said to the king, ‘If it please the king, and if your servant has found favor before you, send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may rebuild it.’ Then the king said to me, the queen sitting beside him, ‘How long will your journey be, and when will you return?’ So it pleased the king to send me, and I gave him a definite time. And I said to the king, ‘If it please the king, let letters be given me for the governors of the provinces beyond the River, that they may allow me to pass through until I come to Judah, and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress which is by the temple, for the wall of the city and for the house to which I will go.’ And the king granted them to me because the good hand of my God was on me” (Neh. 2:1-8).

“And He said to them, ‘Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down’” (Matt. 24:2).

“Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains” (Matt. 24:15-16).

“And He said to them, ‘Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt?’” (Mark 9:12).

“And Jesus said to him, ‘Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another which will not be torn down’” (Mark 13:2).

“For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation” (Luke 19:43-44).

“And He said to them, ‘O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?’ Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures” (Luke 24:25-27).

“He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which translated means Christ)” (John 1:41).

“The woman  said to Him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us’ Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am He’” (John 4:25-26).

“On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, ‘Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, even the King of Israel.’ Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written, ‘FEAR NOT, DAUGHTER OF ZION; BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING, SEATED ON A DONKEY’S COLT.’ These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him” (John 12:12-16).

“But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction”  (Rom. 3:21-22).

“For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (Rom. 5:10).

Messianic Texts in the Prophets: Dan. 7:13-14 (6th c. BC) Son of Man בַ֥ר אֱנָ֖שׁ

Messianic Texts in the Prophets:
Daniel 7:13-14 (6th c. BC)

Son of Man
בַ֥ר אֱנָ֖שׁ (bar ⁾enāsh)

“I kept looking in the night visions,
and behold,
with the clouds of heaven
One like a Son of Man was coming,
and He came up to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before Him.
And to Him was given
dominion, glory and a kingdom,
that all the peoples, nations
and men of every language
might serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
which will not pass away;
and His kingdom is one
which will not be destroyed”
(Dan. 7:13-14).

“And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory” (Matt. 24:30).

“Jesus said to him, ‘You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN’” (Matt. 26:64).

“Then they will see THE SON OF MAN COMING IN CLOUDS with great power and glory” (Mark 13:26).

“And Jesus said, ‘I am; and you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN’” (Mark 14:62).

“And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end” (Luke 1:33).

“Then they will see THE SON OF MAN COMING IN A CLOUD with power and great glory” (Luke 21:27).

“The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand” (John 3:35).

“For HE HAS PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET. But when He says, ‘All things are put in subjection,’ it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him” (1Cor. 15:27).

“Which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church”  (Eph. 1:20-22).

“For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil. 2:9-11).

“And He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father — to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. BEHOLD, HE IS COMING WITH THE CLOUDS, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen” (Rev. 1:6-7).

“And in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash” (Rev. 1:13).

“Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying,
 ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever’” (Rev. 11:15).

“Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud was one like a son of man, having a golden crown on His head and a sharp sickle in His hand” (Rev. 14:14).

Messianic Texts in the Prophets:
Ezekiel 37:15-28 (6th c. BC)
One King
מֶ֣לֶךְ אֶחָ֛ד (melekh ⁾echād)
One Shepherd
רוֹעֶ֥ה אֶחָ֖ד (rō⁽eh ⁾echād)

“The word of the LORD
came again to me saying,
‘And you, son of man,
take for yourself one stick and write on it,
“For Judah and for the sons of Israel, his companions”;
then take another stick and write on it,
“For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim and all the house of Israel, his companions.”
Then join them for yourself one to another into one stick,
that they may become one in your hand.
When the sons of your people speak to you saying,
“Will you not declare to us what you mean by these?”
say to them,
“Thus says the Lord GOD,
‘Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph,
which is in the hand of Ephraim,
and the tribes of Israel, his companions;
and I will put them with it,
with the stick of Judah,
and make them one stick,
and they will be one in My hand.”’
The sticks on which you write will be in your hand before their eyes.
Say to them,
“Thus says the Lord GOD,
‘Behold, I will take the sons of Israel from among the nations where they have gone,
and I will gather them from every side
and bring them into their own land;
and I will make them one nation in the land,
on the mountains of Israel;
and one king
will be king for all of them;
and they will no longer be two nations
and no longer be divided into two kingdoms.
They will no longer defile themselves with their idols,
or with their detestable things,
or with any of their transgressions;
but I will deliver them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned,
and will cleanse them.
And they will be My people,
and I will be their God.
My servant David will be king over them,
and they will all have
one shepherd;
and they will walk in My ordinances
and keep My statutes and observe them.
They will live on the land that I gave to Jacob My servant,
in which your fathers lived;
and they will live on it, they, and their sons and their sons’ sons, forever;
and David My servant
will be their prince
forever.
I will make a covenant of peace with them;
it will be an everlasting covenant with them.
And I will place them and multiply them,
and will set My sanctuary in their midst forever.
My dwelling place also will be with them;
and I will be their God,
and they will be My people.
And the nations will know
that I am the LORD
who sanctifies Israel,
when My sanctuary is in their midst
 forever’”’”
(Ezek. 35:15-28).

Messianic Texts in the Prophets:
Ezekiel 34:23-31 (6th c. BC)
One Shepherd
רֹעֶ֤ה אֶחָד֙ (rō⁽eh ⁾echād)
My Servant David
עַבְדִּ֣י דָוִ֑יד (⁽avdiy dāwīd)

“Then I will set over them
one shepherd,
My servant David,
and he will feed them;
he will feed them himself
and be their shepherd.
And I, the LORD, will be their God,
and My servant David
will be prince among them;
I the LORD have spoken.
I will make a covenant of peace with them
and eliminate harmful beasts from the land
so that they may live securely in the wilderness
and sleep in the woods.
I will make them
and the places around My hill
a blessing.
And I will cause showers
to come down in their season;
they will be showers
of blessing.
Also the tree of the field will yield its fruit
and the earth will yield its increase,
and they will be secure on their land.
Then they will know that I am the LORD,
when I have broken the bars of their yoke
and have delivered them
from the hand of those who enslaved them.
They will no longer be a prey to the nations,
and the beasts of the earth will not devour them;
but they will live securely,
and no one will make them afraid.
I will establish for them
a renowned planting place,
and they will not again be victims of famine in the land,
and they will not endure the insults of the nations anymore.
Then they will know
that I, the LORD their God, am with them,
and that they,
the house of Israel, are My people,’
declares the Lord GOD.
‘As for you, My sheep,
the sheep of My pasture,
you are men,
and I am your God,’
declares the Lord GOD”
(Ezek. 34:23-31).

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers. This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them. So Jesus said to them again, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father” (John 10:1-18).

“For the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the water of life; and God will wipe every tear from their eyes” (Rev. 7:17).

Whom Judgment Belongs
אֲשֶׁר־ל֥וֹ הַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט (⁾asher lō hamishpāt)

“And you,
O profane wicked one,
prince of Israel,
whose day has come,
the time of your final punishment,
thus says the Lord GOD:
Remove the turban and take off the crown.
Things shall not remain as they are.
Exalt that which is low,
and bring low that which is exalted.
A ruin, ruin, ruin I will make it.
This also shall not be,
until he comes,
the one to whom judgment belongs,
and I will give it to him”

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, ‘KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS’” (Rev. 19:11-16).

“Thus says the Lord GOD,
‘I will also take a sprig
from the lofty top of the cedar
and set it out;
I will pluck
from the topmost of its young twigs
a tender one
and I will plant it

On the high mountain of Israel I will plant it,
that it may bring forth boughs
and bear fruit and become a stately cedar.
And birds of every kind will nest under it;
they will nest in the shade of its branches.
All the trees of the field will know that
I am the LORD;
I bring down the high tree, exalt the low tree,
dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish.
I am the LORD;
I have spoken, and I will perform it’”

Messianic Texts in the Prophets: Jer. 33:14-26 (7th c. BC) Righteous Branch of David דָוִ֖ד צֶ֣מַח צְדָקָ֑ה The LORD our Righteousness יְהוָ֥ה ׀ צִדְקֵֽנוּ

Prayer and Bible Expo
Messianic Texts in the Prophets:
Jeremiah 33:14-26 (7th century BC)
Righteous Branch of David
דָוִ֖ד צֶ֣מַח צְדָקָ֑ה (dāwid tzemach tzǝdāqāh)
The LORD our Righteousness
יְהוָ֥ה ׀ צִדְקֵֽנוּ (YHWH tzidqēnū)

“‘Behold, days are coming,’
declares the LORD,
‘when I will fulfill the good word which I have spoken concerning
the house of Israel and the house of Judah.
In those days and at that time
I will cause
a righteous Branch of David
to spring forth;
and He shall execute justice and righteousness on the earth.
In those days Judah will be saved
and Jerusalem will dwell in safety;
and this is the name by which she will be called:
 the LORD our righteousness.’
For thus says the LORD,
‘David shall never lack a man to sit
on the throne of the house of Israel;
and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man before Me
to offer burnt offerings,
to burn grain offerings
and to prepare sacrifices continually.’
The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,
‘Thus says the LORD,
“If you can break My covenant for the day and My covenant for the night, so that day and night will not be at their appointed time, then My covenant may also be broken with David My servant so that he will not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levitical priests, My ministers. As the host of heaven cannot be counted and the sand of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the descendants of David My servant and the Levites who minister to Me.”’
And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,
‘Have you not observed what this people have spoken, saying, “The two families which the LORD chose, He has rejected them”? Thus they despise My people, no longer are they as a nation in their sight.’
Thus says the LORD,
‘If My covenant for day and night stand not, and the fixed patterns of heaven and earth I have not established, then I would reject the descendants of Jacob and David My servant, not taking from his descendants rulers over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. But I will restore their fortunes and will have mercy on them’”
(Jer. 33:14-26).

“Now the LORD said to Abram, ‘Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you; and I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed’” (Gen. 12:1-3, Abrahamic Covenant [unconditional, everlasting]).

“When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever” (2Sam. 7:12-16, Davidic Covenant [unconditional, everlasting]).

“The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind, ‘You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek’” (Psa. 110:4).

“‘Behold, days are coming,’ declares the LORD, ‘when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,’ declares the LORD. ‘But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, “Know the LORD,” for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,’ declares the LORD, ‘for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.’ Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar; the LORD of hosts is His name: ‘If this fixed order departs from before Me,’ declares the LORD, ‘Then the offspring of Israel also will cease from being a nation before Me forever.’ Thus says the LORD, ‘If the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth searched out below, then I will also cast off all the offspring of Israel for all that they have done,’ declares the LORD” (Jer. 31:31-37, New Covenant [unconditional, everlasting]).

So He told them this parable, saying, ‘What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?’” (Luke 15:3-4).

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption” (1Cor. 1:30).

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2Cor. 5:21).

“And may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith” (Phil. 3:9).

“So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, ‘YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU’; just as He says also in another passage, ‘YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK’” (Heb. 5:5-6).

“For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests. And this is clearer still, if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become such not on the basis of a law of physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life. For it is attested of Him, ‘YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.’ For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness (for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. And inasmuch as it was not without an oath (for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him, ‘THE LORD HAS SWORN AND WILL NOT CHANGE HIS MIND, “YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER”’); so much the more also Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant” (Heb. 7:14-22).

But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood. For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, ‘THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU.’  And in the same way he sprinkled both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Heb. 9:11-22).

“‘I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.’ The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost” (Rev. 22:16-17).
