Mark 14:63 Tearing his clothes, the high priest said, “What further need do we have of witnesses?”

What is the high priest’s first response when Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see  THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, AND COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN(Mark 14:62)?

“Tearing his clothes…” (Mark 14:63).
·      διαρρήξας (diarrēxas) (“Tearing”) Masculine Nominative Singular Aorist Active Participle of διαρήγνυμι: to cause something to come apart through violent action or pressure; of fabric tear, of chains or fetters break. (BDAG, 235).
·      What is the response of Joshua and Caleb when the Israelites rebelled against the LORD in the wilderness of Paran at Kadesh after they had spied out the land and brought a report back to the assembly of Israel?
“And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes” (Num 14:6).
·      What was the response of Barnabas and Paul when the crowds in Lystra lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” after a man crippled from birth was healed? (Acts 14:8-13)
“But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out and saying, ‘Men, why are you doing these things? We are also men of the same nature as you, and preach the gospel to you that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, WHO MADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM” (Acts 14:14-15).

What did the high priest say to the gathered chief priests, elders and scribes after tearing his clothes?
“…What further need do we have of witnesses?” (Mark 14:63).
·      μαρτύρων (martyrōn) (“witnesses”) (Objective Genitive)
“One who testifies in legal matters, witness” (BDAG, 619).

Why are the chief priests and the whole Council trying to obtain testimony against Jesus?
“…to put Him to death” (Mark 14:55).

LORD God Almighty,
You are God the Father, and Jesus is Your Son, God the Son, through Whom You send the Holy Spirit, God the Spirit. One holy, holy, holy God in three holy, holy, holy Persons. You are the Living God, and You are the God of the living. You manifested the Word of Life, the eternal life, which was with You and manifested to us, Your Son, Jesus Christ, Who is the resurrection and the life. Blessed are Your beloved, the redeemed, who fellowship with You and with Your Son, Jesus Christ, and with the Holy Spirit, Whom You sent to give us new birth into Christ the Beloved. You are Light, and in You there is no darkness at all. May the saints walk in the Light as You Yourself are in the Light, living in the Spirit, walking and worshiping in the Spirit in truth and love. May You delight in Your offspring, the work of Your hands, and may we glorify You in word and deed, rejoicing in the Lord always, singing the song of our salvation with boldness, power, joy, and grace, rejoicing, delighting in You. May Your Word be our heart’s joy. And may our words be an offering of praise.

Blessing to Your glory. Glory to Your Name.
In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
