In the same way that those passing by hurl abuse at
Jesus on the cross, what are the chief priests and scribes doing?
“…were mocking Him among themselves” (Mark 15:31).
· What did Jesus
say as the soldiers crucified Him?
“But Jesus was
saying, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’ …”
(Luke 23:34a).
What are the chief priests and scribes saying?
“…He saved others; He cannot
save Himself. Let this Christ, the
King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and
believe!...” (Mark 15:31b-32a).
· Who do they
say Jesus saved?
“…others…”
(Mark 15:31b).
· Who do they
say Jesus cannot save?
“…Himself…”
(Mark 15:31b).
· Why do they
command Christ, the King of Israel, to now come down from the cross?
“…so that we
may see and believe!” (Mark 15:32a).
What are those who were crucified with Him doing?
“…were also insulting Him”
(Mark 15:32b).
· What
additional information does Luke provide concerning those who were crucified
with Him?
“One
of the criminals who were hanged there
was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are
You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!” But the other answered, and rebuking him
said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of
condemnation? “And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are
receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing
wrong.” And he was saying, “Jesus,
remember me when You come in Your
kingdom!” And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with
Me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:39-43).
Father,
You so loved the world that
You gave Your only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish,
but have eternal life. Jesus belongs to You. He is Your Servant, sent to take
away the sins of the world, bringing redemption to Your people.
May we who belong to Jesus
have the same attitude in ourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who
although He existed in the form of You, did not regard equality with You a
thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond servant and
being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He
humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a
cross.
For this reason also, You
highly exalted Jesus, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven
and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of You the Father.
May we work out our salvation
with fear and trembling, for it is You Who is at work in us, both to will and
to work for Your good pleasure. May we do all things without grumbling or
disputing; so that we will prove ourselves to be blameless and innocent, Your
children above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation,
among whom we appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so
that in the day of Christ, we will have reason to glory because we did not run
in vain nor toil in vain. May we rejoice always in the Lord.
May the truth of Jesus be
revealed and may many confess with their mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in
their hearts that You raised Him from the dead, so that they may be saved, for
with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the
mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
For the Scripture says,
‘Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.’ For there is no distinction
between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches
for all who call on Him; for ‘Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be
saved.’
May the Holy Spirit minister
gloriously in our midst, bringing many sons and daughters to glory in Christ,
to the praise of Your glory and the glory of the powerful Name of Messiah Jesus
our Lord. Glory and thanks to You through Jesus for so great a salvation by
Your grace through faith alone in Jesus.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
