John 20:9 For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from
the dead. 10 So the disciples went away
again to their own homes.
What had the disciples not yet understood?
- “For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead” (John 20:9).
o How had
Jesus prepared His disciples?
§ Matt. 12:40 For just as Jonah was
three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of
Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
§ Matt. 16:21 From that time Jesus began to show his
disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders
and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
§ Matt. 17:9 And as they were coming down the mountain,
Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man
is raised from the dead.”
§ Matt. 17:12 But I tell you that Elijah
has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they
pleased. So also the Son of Man will
certainly suffer at their hands.”
§ Matt. 17:22 As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus
said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be
delivered into the hands of men,
§ Matt. 20:18 “See, we are going up to
Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and
scribes, and they will condemn him to death
§ Mark 8:31 And he began to teach them that the Son of
Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests
and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.
§ Mark 9:12 And he said to them, “Elijah
does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man
that he should suffer many things and be
treated with contempt?
§ Mark 9:31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands
of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will
rise.”
§ Luke 9:22 saying, “ The Son of Man must suffer many things
and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and
be raised up on the third day.”
§ Luke 9:44 “Let these words sink into
your ears: The Son of Man is about to be
delivered into the hands of men.”
§ Luke 17:25 But first he must suffer
many things and be rejected by this generation.
§ Luke 18:32 For he will be delivered
over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon.
§ John 2:18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these
things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this
temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to
build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about
the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his
disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and
the word that Jesus had spoken.
Where do the disciples go after leaving the empty
tomb?
- “So the disciples went away again to their homes” (John 20:10).
Father,
How patient You are with our
unbelief and ignorance of Your Word. May we become better stewards of the truth
You have revealed in Your Word and stand steadfast in the testimony of Jesus through
Whom grace and truth were realized and in Whom we receive grace upon grace. In
Jesus’ Name Amen.
