Rev.
8:12 The fourth angel sounded, and a
third of the sun and a third of the moon and a third of the stars were struck,
so that a third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a
third of it, and the night in the same way.

Who sounded the trumpet?
(8:12)
the
fourth angel
How much of the sun, moon,
and stars were struck?
a
third
Why are a third of the sun
and a third of the moon and a third of the stars struck?
“. .
. so that a third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a
third of it, and the night in the same way” (8:12).
o Zech. 13:8 “It will come about in all the land,”
Declares the LORD,
“That two parts in it will be cut
off and perish;
But the third will be left in it.
9 “And I will bring the
third part through the fire,
Refine them as silver is refined,
And test them as gold is tested.
They will call on My name,
And I will answer them;
I will say, ‘They are My people,’
And they will say, ‘The LORD is my
God.’”
o Ex. 10:21
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky,
that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even a darkness which may be
felt.”
o Is. 13:10 For the stars of heaven and their
constellations
Will not flash forth their light;
The sun will be dark when it rises
And the moon will not shed its
light.
o Ezek. 32:7 “And when I extinguish you,
I will cover the heavens and darken
their stars;
I will cover the sun with a cloud
And the moon will not give its
light.
o Joel 2:10 Before them the earth quakes,
The heavens tremble,
The sun and the moon grow dark
And the stars lose their brightness.
o Joel 2:31 “The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood
Before the great and awesome day of
the LORD comes.
o Joel 3:15 The sun and moon grow dark and the stars lose
their brightness.
For how long will the day and
night not shine?
for
a third of it
What impresses you about the
fourth trumpet?
God's power and authority determine the presence of light and darkness. Only
by God’s grace does the sun brighten the day, and the moon and stars softly
illumine the night. Light is evidence of God’s grace and Presence. Darkness is
the absence of light, an outward manifestation of the absence of God.
What do you learn about God
from Rev 8:12?
God
is the source of light. On the first day of creation, God created light, and He
saw that the light was good. God separated the light from the darkness, calling
them day and night. On the fourth day of creation, God created the sun, moon,
and stars to provide lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the
earth (Gen 1). He created light for our good. And He will remove light so that
darkness prevails during judgment of rebellion.
How could this transform your
life?
Live
in the light, practicing the truth. Believe in the Light, so that darkness will
not overtake you. “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of
the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the
Light of life” (John 8:12). Jesus said, “I have come as Light into the world,
so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness” (John 12:46).
Father,
You are the Source of light.
In the beginning, You created light and saw that the light was good. In wisdom
and power, You created all things. And by Your grace, creation exists in
continuum. All of creation reveals the glory of Your infinite wisdom, complete
knowledge, eternal power, divine nature, and glorious grace. You who said, “Light shall shine out of
darkness” are the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the
knowledge of Your glory in the face of Christ. May eyes be opened so that they may
turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to You, that they
may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been
sanctified by faith in Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
