Rev. 9:1 Then the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star from
heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the key of the bottomless pit was
given to him. 2 He opened the bottomless pit, and smoke went
up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air
were darkened by the smoke of the pit. 3 Then out of the smoke came
locusts upon the earth, and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth
have power. 4 They were told not to hurt the grass of the
earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the
seal of God on their foreheads. 5 And they were not
permitted to kill anyone, but to torment for five months; and their torment was
like the torment of a scorpion when it stings a man. 6 And in those days men will seek death and will
not find it; they will long to die, and death flees from them.
Rev. 9:7 The appearance of the locusts was like horses
prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and
their faces were like the faces of men. 8 They had hair like the
hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions. 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of
iron; and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many
horses rushing to battle. 10 They have tails like
scorpions, and stings; and in their tails is their power to hurt men for five
months. 11 They have as king over them, the angel of the
abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name
Apollyon.

What impresses you about the fifth trumpet?
The power given to the
horrific apocalyptic creatures to torment men, who seek death but cannot find
it because it flees from them, offers a glimpse of the eternal fate of those
who are enslaved to Satan because they have rejected the Son of God. The
locusts cannot kill men who have God’s seal on their foreheads, nor harm the
grass, greenery, or trees, but no limitations are placed on the degree of torment inflicted on the sons of disobedience.
What do you learn about God from Rev 9:1-11?
God’s judgments are
righteous and true, and terrifyingly horrific.
How could this truth transform your life?
Praise
the glory of God’s grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved and
raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ
Jesus. For by grace we have been saved through faith; and that not of
ourselves, it is the gift of God.
Father,
Your judgments are righteous and true,
for all have sinned and fall short of Your glory. The wages of sin is death,
but Your free gift is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Jesus died for our
sins according to the Scriptures, and He was buried, and He was raised on the
third day according to the Scriptures. All whom You have justified by faith in
Jesus have been removed from the darkness of Satan’s dominion, where sin and death
reign.
By your grace we have been saved through
faith, and that not of ourselves, it is Your gift; not as a result of works, so
that no one may boast. For we are Your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for
good works, which you prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. Glory
and thanks to You, our God and Father, for Your glorious grace in Christ Jesus.
You have spared us from eternal torment and the judgment that is coming.
