Despised and Forsaken of Men

נִבְזֶה֙ וַחֲדַ֣ל אִישִׁ֔ים (nivzeh wachadal ⁾īshīm)

Man of Sorrows and Acquainted with Grief

אִ֥ישׁ מַכְאֹב֖וֹת וִיד֣וּעַ חֹ֑לִי (⁾īsh makh⁾ōvōt wiydūa⁽ cholī)

“He was despised and forsaken of men, 

a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; 
and like one from whom men hide their face 

He was despised, and we did not esteem Him” 

(Isa. 53:3).

נִבְזֶה֙ וַחֲדַ֣ל אִישִׁ֔ים אִ֥ישׁ מַכְאֹב֖וֹת וִיד֣וּעַ חֹ֑לִי וּכְמַסְתֵּ֤ר פָּנִים֙ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ נִבְזֶ֖ה וְלֹ֥א חֲשַׁבְנֻֽהוּ׃

“But I am a worm and not a man, a reproach of men and despised by the people” (Psa. 22:6).

“Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel and its Holy One, to the despised One, to the One abhorred by the nation, to the Servant of rulers, kings will see and arise, princes will also bow down, because of the LORD who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You” (Isa. 49:7). 

“But the LORD was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief; if He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand” (Isa. 53:10).

“And He said to them, ‘Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt?’” (Mark 9:12).

“Saying, ‘Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles. They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again’” (Mark 10:33-34).

“Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, ‘Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon, and after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him; and the third day He will rise again’” (Luke 18:31-33).

“He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him” (John 1:10-11).

Is. 49:7 כֹּ֣ה אָֽמַר־יְהוָה֩ גֹּאֵ֨ל יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל קְדוֹשׁ֗וֹ לִבְזֹה־נֶ֜פֶשׁ לִמְתָ֤עֵֽב גּוֹי֙ לְעֶ֣בֶד מֹשְׁלִ֔ים מְלָכִים֙ יִרְא֣וּ וָקָ֔מוּ שָׂרִ֖ים וְיִֽשְׁתַּחֲוּ֑וּ לְמַ֤עַן יְהוָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נֶאֱמָ֔ן קְדֹ֥שׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיִּבְחָרֶֽךָּ׃

Is. 53:10 וַיהוָ֞ה חָפֵ֤ץ דַּכְּאוֹ֙ הֶֽחֱלִ֔י אִם־תָּשִׂ֤ים אָשָׁם֙ נַפְשׁ֔וֹ יִרְאֶ֥ה זֶ֖רַע יַאֲרִ֣יךְ יָמִ֑ים וְחֵ֥פֶץ יְהוָ֖ה בְּיָד֥וֹ יִצְלָֽח׃

(Mark 9:12 (MHNT הֵשִׁיב לָהֶם: ”אֵלִיָּהוּ אָמְנָם יָבוֹא רִאשׁוֹנָה וְיָשִׁיב אֶת הַכֹּל; וְאֵיךְ כָּתוּב עַל בֶּן־הָאָדָם שֶׁיִסְבֹּל הַרְבֵּה וְיִמְאֲסוּ בּוֹ? 

Mark 10:33 ”הִנֵּה אֲנַחְנוּ עוֹלִים לִירוּשָׁלַיִם וּבֶן־הָאָדָם יִמָּסֵר לְרָאשֵׁי הַכֹּהֲנִים וְלַסּוֹפְרִים. הֵם יֶחֶרְצוּ אֶת דִּינוֹ לַמָּוֶת וְיִמְסְרוּ אוֹתוֹ לַגּוֹיִם. 34 הַלָּלוּ יְהַתְּלוּ בּוֹ וְיִירְקוּ בּוֹ, יַלְקוּ אוֹתוֹ וְיַהַרְגוּהוּ, וְאַחֲרֵי שְׁלוֹשָׁה יָמִים יָקוּם.“

Luke 18:31‏ הוּא לָקַח אִתּוֹ אֶת הַשְּׁנֵים־עָשָׂר וְאָמַר לָהֶם: ”הִנֵּה אֲנַחְנוּ עוֹלִים לִירוּשָׁלַיִם וְכָל מַה שֶּׁנִּכְתַּב בִּידֵי הַנְּבִיאִים עַל בֶּן־הָאָדָם יִתְקַיֵּם;  ‎32‏ הוּא יִמָּסֵר לַגּוֹיִם וְהֵם יְהַתְּלוּ בּוֹ, גַּם יִתְעַלְּלוּ בּוֹ וְיִרְקוּ עָלָיו,  ‎33‏ וּלְאַחַר שֶׁיַּלְקוּ אוֹתוֹ יַהַרְגוּהוּ, וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי יָקוּם.“

John 1:10 בָּעוֹלָם הָיָה וְעַל־יָדָיו נִהְיָה הָעוֹלָם, וְהָעוֹלָם לֹא הִכִּירוֹ.  11 הוּא בָּא אֶל שֶׁלּוֹ וְאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר לוֹ לֹא קִבְּלוּ אוֹתוֹ.
