Messianic Texts in the Prophets: Isaiah 53:7 (8th c. BC)
Oppressed נִגַּ֨שׂ (niggas) Afflicted נַעֲנֶה֮ (na⁽aneh)
Like a Lamb Led to Slaughter
כַּשֶּׂה֙ לַטֶּ֣בַח יוּבָ֔ל (kaseh latevach yūvāl)
Silent נֶאֱלָ֑מָה (ne⁾elamah)
“He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
yet He did not open His mouth;
like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
and like a sheep that is silent
before its shearers,
so He did not open His mouth”
(Isa. 53:7).
נִגַּ֨שׂ וְה֣וּא נַעֲנֶה֮ וְלֹ֣א יִפְתַּח־פִּיו֒ כַּשֶּׂה֙ לַטֶּ֣בַח יוּבָ֔ל וּכְרָחֵ֕ל לִפְנֵ֥י גֹזְזֶ֖יהָ נֶאֱלָ֑מָה וְלֹ֥א יִפְתַּ֖ח פִּֽיו׃
“But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; and I did not know that they had devised plots against me, saying, ‘Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more’” (Jer. 11:19).
“But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, ‘I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God’” (Matt. 26:63).
“And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer. Then Pilate said to Him, ‘Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?’ And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the governor was quite amazed” (Matt. 27:12-14).
“But He kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, ‘Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?’” (Mark 14:61).
“But Jesus made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed” (Mark 15:5).
“And he questioned Him at some length; but He answered him nothing” (Luke 23:9).
“And he entered into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, ‘Where are You from?’ But Jesus gave him no answer” (John 19:9).
“Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ And he said, ‘Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?’ And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Now the passage of Scripture which he was reading was this: ‘HE WAS LED AS A SHEEP TO SLAUGHTER; AND AS A LAMB BEFORE ITS SHEARER IS SILENT, SO HE DOES NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH. IN HUMILIATION HIS JUDGMENT WAS TAKEN AWAY; WHO WILL RELATE HIS GENERATION? FOR HIS LIFE IS REMOVED FROM THE EARTH.’ The eunuch answered Philip and said, ‘Please tell me, of whom does the prophet say this? Of himself or of someone else?’ Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him” (Acts 8:30-35).
“And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth” (Rev. 5:6).
(Jer. 11:19 (BHS וַאֲנִ֕י כְּכֶ֥בֶשׂ אַלּ֖וּף יוּבַ֣ל לִטְב֑וֹחַ וְלֹֽא־יָדַ֜עְתִּי כִּֽי־עָלַ֣י ׀ חָשְׁב֣וּ מַחֲשָׁב֗וֹת נַשְׁחִ֨יתָה עֵ֤ץ בְּלַחְמוֹ֙ וְנִכְרְתֶ֙נּוּ֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ חַיִּ֔ים וּשְׁמ֖וֹ לֹֽא־יִזָּכֵ֥ר עֽוֹד׃
(Matt. 26:63 (MHNT אוּלָם יֵשׁוּעַ שָׁתַק. אָמַר אֵלָיו הַכֹּהֵן הַגָדוֹל: ”אֲנִי מַשְׁבִּיעַ אוֹתְךָ בֵּאלֹהִים חַיִּים שֶׁתֹּאמַר לָנוּ אִם אַתָּה הַמָּשִׁיחַ בֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִים?“
Matt. 27:12 וְלֹא עָנָה דָּבָר כַּאֲשֶׁר הֶאֱשִׁימוּהוּ רָאשֵׁי הַכֹּהֲנִים וְהַזְּקֵנִים.
Matt. 27:13 אָמַר אֵלָיו פִּילָטוֹס: ”אֵינְךָ שׁוֹמֵעַ כַּמָּה הֵם מְעִידִים נֶגְדְּךָ?“ 14 אַךְ הוּא לֹא הֵשִׁיב לוֹ גַּם לֹא עַל טַעֲנָה אַחַת, לְתִמְהוֹנוֹ הָרַב שֶׁל הַנָּצִיב.
Mark 14:61 אַךְ הוּא שָׁתַק וְלֹא הֵשִׁיב דָּבָר. הוֹסִיף הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֹל וְשָׁאַל אוֹתוֹ: ”הַאִם אַתָּה הַמָּשִׁיחַ בֶּן־הַמְבֹרָךְ?“
Mark 15:5 אוּלָם יֵשׁוּעַ לֹא הֵשִׁיב עוֹד דָּבָר, לְתִמְהוֹנוֹ שֶׁל פִּילָטוֹס.
Luke 23:9 הוּא שָׁאַל אוֹתוֹ עַל דְּבָרִים רַבִּים, אַךְ יֵשׁוּעַ לֹא הֵשִׁיב לוֹ דָּבָר.
John 19:9 הוּא נִכְנַס שׁוּב לְבֵית הַמִּמְשָׁל וְשָׁאַל אֶת יֵשׁוּעַ: ”מֵאַיִן אַתָּה?“ אַךְ יֵשׁוּעַ לֹא עָנָה לוֹ.
Acts 8:30 פִילִיפּוֹס רָץ אֶל הַמֶּרְכָּבָה וְשָׁמַע אוֹתוֹ קוֹרֵא בִּישַׁעְיָהוּ הַנָּבִיא. שָׁאַל אוֹתוֹ: ”הַאִם אַתָּה מֵבִין מַה שֶּׁאַתָּה קוֹרֵא?“ 31 הֵשִׁיב וְאָמַר: ”וְאֵיךְ אוּכַל אִם לֹא יַדְרִיךְ אוֹתִי אִישׁ?“ הוּא בִּקֵּשׁ מִפִילִיפּוֹס שֶׁיַּעֲלֶה וְיֵשֵׁב אִתּוֹ. 32 קֶטַע הַכָּתוּב שֶׁקָּרָא הָיָה:
”כַּשֶׂה לַטֶּבַח יוּבַל וּכְרָחֵל לִפְנֵי גֹזְזֶיהָ נֶאֱלָמָה,
וְלֹא יִפְתַּח פִּיו.
Acts 8:33 מֵעֹצֶר וּמִמִּשְׁפָּט לֻקַּח וְאֶת־דּוֹרוֹ מִי יְשׂוֹחֵחַ,
כִּי נִגְזַר מֵאֶרֶץ חַיִּים.“
Acts 8:34 אָמַר הַסָּרִיס אֶל פִילִיפּוֹס: ”אֶשְׁאַל אוֹתְךָ, עַל מִי הַנָּבִיא אוֹמֵר זֹאת, עַל עַצְמוֹ אוֹ עַל מִישֶׁהוּ אַחֵר?“
Acts 8:35 פָּתַח פִילִיפּוֹס בִּדְבָרוֹ וּבְהַתְחִילוֹ מִן הַכָּתוּב הַזֶּה בִּשֵׂר לוֹ אֶת יֵשׁוּעַ.
Rev. 5:6 וְרָאִיתִי בֵּין הַכִּסֵּא וְאַרְבַּע הַחַיּוֹת וּבֵין הַזְּקֵנִים עוֹמֵד שֶׂה כְּמוֹ טָבוּחַ; שֶׁבַע קַרְנַיִם לוֹ, וְשֶׁבַע עֵינַיִם אֲשֶׁר הֵן שֶׁבַע רוּחוֹת הָאֱלֹהִים הַשְּׁלוּחוֹת אֶל כָּל הָאָרֶץ.
