Thirty Pieces of Silver
שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים הַכֶּ֔סֶף (shǝlōshīm hakesef)
“Thus said the LORD my God:
‘Become shepherd of the flock
doomed to slaughter.
Those who buy them slaughter them and go unpunished,
and those who sell them say,
“Blessed be the LORD, I have become rich,”
and their own shepherds have no pity on them.
For I will no longer have pity on the inhabitants of this land,
declares the LORD.
Behold, I will cause each of them to fall into the hand of his neighbor,
and each into the hand of his king,
and they shall crush the land,
and I will deliver none from their hand.’
So I became the
shepherd
of the flock
doomed to be slaughtered
by the sheep traders.
And I took two staffs,
one I named Favor,
the other I named Union.
And I tended the sheep.
In one month I destroyed the three shepherds.
But I became impatient with them,
and they also
detested
me.
So I said, ‘I will not be your shepherd.
What is to die, let it die.
What is to be destroyed, let it be destroyed.
And let those who are left devour the flesh of one another.’
And I took my staff Favor,
and I broke it,
annulling the covenant that I had made with all the peoples.
So it was annulled on that day,
and the sheep traders,
who were watching me,
knew that it was the word of the LORD.
Then I said to them,
‘If it seems good to you,
give me my wages;
but if not, keep them.’
And they weighed out as my wages
thirty pieces of silver.
Then the LORD said to me,
‘Throw it to the potter’
—the lordly price at which I was
priced
by them.
So I took the
thirty pieces of silver
and threw them
into the house of the LORD,
to the potter.
Then I broke my second staff Union,
annulling the brotherhood
between Judah and Israel”
(Zech. 11:4-14).

“Then the word of the LORD came to me saying, ‘Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and say to those shepherds, “Thus says the Lord GOD, ‘Woe, shepherds of Israel who have been feeding themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flock? You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the fat sheep without feeding the flock’”’” (Ezek. 34:1-3).
“Son of man, take a stick and write on it, ‘For Judah, and the people of Israel associated with him’; then take another stick and write on it, ‘For Joseph (the stick of Ephraim) and all the house of Israel associated with him.’And join them one to another into one stick, that they may become one in your hand. And when your people say to you, ‘Will you not tell us what you mean by these?’ say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am about to take the stick of Joseph (that is in the hand of Ephraim) and the tribes of Israel associated with him. And I will join with it the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, that they may be one in my hand. When the sticks on which you write are in your hand before their eyes, then say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will take the people of Israel from the nations among which they have gone, and will gather them from all around, and bring them to their own land. And I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. And one king shall be king over them all, and they shall be no longer two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms. They shall not defile themselves anymore with their idols and their detestable things, or with any of their transgressions. But I will save them from all the backslidings in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God. My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes. They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where your fathers lived. They and their children and their children’s children shall dwell there forever, and David my servant shall be their prince forever. I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in their land and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in their midst forevermore. My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD who sanctifies Israel, when my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore” (Ezek. 37:16-28).
“And said, ‘What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?’ And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him” (Matt. 26:15).
“Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, ‘I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.’ But they said, ‘What is that to us? See to that yourself!’ And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, ‘It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.’And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers. For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: ‘AND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel; AND THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTER’S FIELD, AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME’” (Matt. 27:3-10).
“(Now this man acquired a field with the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. And it became known to all who were living in Jerusalem; so that in their own language that field was called Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood)” (Acts 1:18-19).
“But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction” (1Tim. 6:9).
